After reading Book VI, I can tell that she is generous and brave. I can tell she is brave by what she does when Odysseus emerges from the bushes in front of her; on page 172, lines 152 to 155 it says, "...they scattered in panic down the jutting beaches. Only Alcinous' daughter held fast, for Athena planted courage within her heart, dissolved the trembling in her limbs, and she firmly stood her ground and faced Odysseus..." I can also tell she is generous by what she does for Odysseus, on pages 174 and 175 she gives him food, water, clothing, and the way to the town.
I think that there were two main reasons for the first four books of the Odyssey. The first reason was to set the general scene for what was going on at the moment, and what life at that place and time was like. “All the survivors, all who avoided headlong death/ were safe at home, escaped the wars and waves. / But one man alone... his heart set on his wife and his return-Calypso” (77-78 lines 14-16). This line introduces one of the main characters, Calypso, and shows that it is a time of war, and sets the scene a little bit for what is currently going on. There is also another reason for the first four books in the Odyssey. That was also to tell about Odysseus and what the life of his family at home was like without him. Telemachus, Odysseus' son, says,”' So, mother,/ go back to your quarters... I hold the reins of power in this house'” (89 lines 409-414). This shows that the condition in his family is very tense and hostile. His twenty year old son is needing to mature very quickly. There is also another factor that in increacing the hostility in the household. “'You suitors who plague my mother, you, you insolent, overweening...'”(89 lines 422-423). The suitors are making life for Penelope and Telemachus very difficult and it is going to make Telemachus need to mature even faster.
“…and she firmly stood her ground and faced Odysseus…” (Page 173). This quote may explain, in part, just what kind of person Nausicaa is. She remains to face Odysseus, the stranger, while all of her maids have scattered due to his rugged appearance. Nausicaa is a brave and kind person, and her compassion for Odysseus can be felt in this next quote: “ friend, you’re hardly a wicked man, and no fool, I’d say… But now, seeing you’ve reached our city and our land, you’ll never lack for clothing or any other gift…” (Page 174). She promised Odysseus hospitality upon first meeting him, when he is in a very unclean condition. “ Give the stranger food and drink, my girls” (Page 176) is another quote that tells of Nausicaa’s kindness. Nausicaa is also described as beautiful by Odysseus in this quote: “… are you a goddess or a mortal?” (172). These quotes demonstrate what kind of person Nausicaa is.
After reading Book Six, I identify that Nausicaa has godlike attributes. On page 173, Odysseus says to Nausicaa, “Are you a goddess or a mortal? If one of the gods who rule the skies up there, you’re Artemis come to the life.” Artemis is one of Zeus’ daughters, and is the goddess of the wilderness, fertility, and childbirth. Odysseus states that when he looks at her a sense of wonder takes him, proving that she is beautiful. Additionally, Nausicaa is brave, unlike the other girls. When Odysseus approaches the naked girls dancing on the beach, the narrator describes the scene by saying, “They [the girls one the beach] scattered in a panic down the jutting beaches. Only Alcinous’ daughter [Nausicaa] held fast.” Nausicaa doesn’t run away when she sees Odysseus, showing that she’s braver then the others, showing she is more divine, like a goddess. In conclusion, Nausicaa’s appearance and attitude is like those of a goddess.
Nausicaa is the daughter of King Alcinous and her character is extremely courageous and brave (with the help of Athena). She discovers Odyssey near the washing-pools and he approaches her. She doesn’t back down like her fellow maidens. In fact after Odyssey is done begging and pleading to her she retorts with a command to her maidens, “ Every stranger and beggar comes from Zeus…So quick, my girls, give our newfound friend some food and drink” Not only does she show her courage in words, but also by bringing Odyssey back to her kingdom.
Nausicaa is a very kind person. One way she is a kind person is that after she sees Odysseus unlike her maids she doesn’t run or scream. Also, she gives him some soap and the olive oil so he can wash himself in the stream. “At that they teased Odysseus and led Odysseus down to a sheltered spot where he could find a seat.” That shows that the maids where a little scared but also curious about Odysseus. “They hung on her words and did her will at once, set before Odysseus food and drink, and he ate and drank, the great Odysseus, long deprived, so ravenous now-it seemed like years since he had last tasted food” This quote shows how Nausicaa gave him food and drink, I feel that is a major act of kindness because he defiantly needed it. That is how Nausicaa is a very kind person.
In the story the Odyssey the character Nausicaa is a very generous person. For example, when Odysseus comes out from the bush and instead of being afraid she asks him if he wants some clothes. Also when she says, “I’ll show you our town, tell you people’s name” (174). In this quote you can see that she offers him to come back with her to her city. Another example is when she says, “Enough. Give the stranger food and drink, my girls.” Here, even though he is a stranger, she gives him some food and drink because he looks very tired. Nausicaa is a very generous person because even though she helped Odysseus she could have chosen not to.
After reading Book VI, I can tell that Nausicaa was a brave kind of person. Since she was favored by the gods, Athena gave her the courage to stand up to Odysseus instead of running away like her maids have done. She also is thoughtful as well. In the book, Nausicaa says, “Stop, my friends! Why run when you see a man? Surely you don’t think him an enemy, do you?... But here’s an unlucky wanderer strayed our way and we must tend him well.” She helped Odysseus out by giving him some clothes, food, and a drink once he bathed. She also gave him directions to her father’s palace and go there once he thinks she has returned home. She told him to find her mother and plead for help to get back to his homelands.
I think that Nausicaa is a very good and kind person. One thing she says is, “Give the stranger food and drink, my girls” (page 176, lines 273). This quote shows how kind Nausicaa is. She gives Odysseus food and water and she doesn’t even know who this man is. I also think that she’s cunning. I think this because she says, “’Daddy dear, / I wonder, won’t you have them harness a wagon for me, / the tall one with the good smooth wheels… so I / can take out clothes to the river for a washing?” (page 170, lines 61-64). She is just saying this to her father to get him to let her take the clothes to the river. She wants this because Athena told her in a dream that no man would want to marry a woman with dirty clothes. She is just trying to trick her father. This is what kind of person I think that Nausicaa is.
After reading book VI, you can tell that Nausicaa is a good person who will help others. She is a nurturer and doesn’t want to see other people suffer. You can tell this by the way she openly gives Odysseus food and drink without knowing him. For example, on page 175 Nausicaa orders her handmaids: “So, quick, my girls, give our newfound friend some food and drink and bathe the man in the river, wherever you find some shelter from the wind.” From this quote you can see that Nausicaa wants this unfamiliar person to be comfortable with his surroundings and life. However, although Nausicaa offers Odysseus food, shelter, water, and clothing, she is a selfish being. This shines through on page 177, where she says, “(they) might say, ‘Now who’s that tall, handsome stranger Nausicaa has in tow? Where’d she light him? Her husband to be, just wait! But who, some shipwrecked stray she’s taken up with, some alien from abroad?’…So they’ll scoff…think of the scandal that would face me then.” This quote reveals that Nausicaa also has a wedding in mind while she’s helping Odysseus, hoping that he will be the dim one to fall for her ways. Also, this quote shows that she doesn’t want people to gossip about her. This is extremely selfish because poor Odysseus has just traveled many miles to come to shore and be safe, but she won’t let him ride home with her, to avoid a scandal. Therefore, Nausicaa is a caring person but one that will always put herself first above others.
Nausicaa is princess of the Alcinous, daughter of Alcmous. She has the beauty that is matched by gods. The kind of person that Nausicaa is a brave , courageous person yet is mixed with a dash of cleverness. This can be seen especially with her when she is helping Odysseus into her city-state.(Pg176-177 Ps 275-329) This shows that in all her beauty and looks she still has the power to think and help. Also she is thoughtful when she was picked by Athena to carry out this very important task of finding Odysseus and helping him back. This shows the person that she is and what she does to achieve this task.
From reading Book Six in The Odyssey, we can tell a lot about Nausicaa, King Alcinous’s daughter. One trait that is shown is how kind she is, extending her welcome to Odysseus, a stranger on her father’s island. She says, “Stranger… Seeing you’ve reached our city and our land, you’ll never lack for clothing or any other gift… I’ll show you our town.” From this, we can see how she welcomes Odysseus, promising to clothe, feed, and take care of him. She is also very cautious, saying “Wait, let’s do it this way… you follow the mules and wagons, stepping briskly.” She does not want people “spying us, (who) might say, ‘Now who’s that tall, handsome stranger Nausicaa has in tow?’” She is making sure no one mistakes Odysseus to be her lover. Nausicaa is a caring character who helps Odysseus on his long journey home.
Nausicaa is a kind person that is brave and giving. She shows this when she stays when Odysseus came out while her friends ran away. We can see that she is giving when she says “but now, seeing you’ve reached our city and our land, / you’ll never lack for clothing or any other gifts” (page 174 lines 210-211). We can also see that she is a good person because she was chosen by Athena to find Odysseus. If she was not a good, kind person Athena wouldn’t have chosen her.
After I have read book 6 in The Odyssey, I learned that Nausicaa is a very caring person. In the book, when the girls finally encounter with Odysseus, Nausicaa was the only girl to stay; “ About to mingle with those lovely girls… they all scattered in panic down the jutting beaches. Only Alcinous’ daughter held fast… and she firmly stood her ground and faced Odysseus” (172, 149-153). This shows the Nausicaa is caring because when all the girls ran in fear she stayed to help “the stranger.” She is also kind because she says, “’ So, quick, my girls, give our newfound friend some food and drink and bathe the man in the river, wherever you find some shelter form the wind”’(175, 229-232). Nausicaa was a kind person to Odysseus and helped him out when he needed it.
Nausicaa is a princess. She is the daughter of Alcinous, the kind of Scheria. She is “a match for the deathless gods in build and beauty.” She is also very generous. This is demonstrated when she says, “Stranger… seeing you’ve reached our city and our land, you’ll never lack…I’ll show you our town.” She further displays her generosity by lending Odysseus her suppling oil, giving him food, and bringing him back to her place of residence. She is also clever, as I can see when she devises a plan for Odysseus to get to her father’s home.
Nausicaa is the wise, benevolent princess of Phaeacia. This is shown in the quote, "Nausicaa, the daughter of generous King Alcinous... 'It's Olympian Zeus himself who hands our fortunes out, to each of us in turn, to the good and bad, however Zeus prefers... He gave you pains it seems. You simply have to bear it.'" found on pages 169 and 174 . Her kindness is shown when the line continues, "'But now, seeing you've reached our city and our land, you'll never lack for clothing or any other gift, the right of worn-out suppliants come our way. I'll show you our town, tell you our people's name.'". In addition, she further shows her compassion on page 175 when it says, "'But here's a unlucky wanderer strayed our way and we must tend him well. Every stranger and beggar comes from Zeus, and whatever scrap we give him he'll be glad to get. So, quick, my girls, give our newfound friend some food and drink and bathe the man in the river, wherever you find some shelter from the wind.'" Thus, I conclude that Nausicaa is, and will grow to be, a wise and caring person.
Nausicca from Homer’s Odyssey is a very clever character. She shows that she is clever when she devises a plan to help Odysseus without having to show that she is with a man. When talking to Odysseus about bringing him hack to her town, she tells him her fears when she says, “‘But I shrink from all our sea-dogs’ nasty gossip. Some old salt might mock us behind our backs…so they’ll scoff…just think of the scandal that would face me then.”’ (Page 177 lines 299-313) In this quote she says that she is afraid of people seeing her with a man, even though she is unwed. But being the clever young woman that she is, she devises a plan to get him in without being seen with her. She tells him to, “‘You’ll find a splendid grove along the road…take a seat there, wait a while, and give us time to make it into town and reach my father’s house. When you think were home, walk on yourself to the city, ask the way to my father’s palace, generous King Alcinous.’” This shows how Nausicca, daughter of King Alcinous, is cunning and clever.
After reading Book 5 you can tell that Nausicaa is a kind and caring person. You can tell that she is kind when she says, “… you’ll never lack clothing or any other gift, the right of worn-out suppliants come our way. I’ll show you our town, tell you our people’s name.”(174)(211-214) This shows that Nausicaa is kind because she welcomes Odysseus like he was a friend instead of running way from him. Another characteristic of Nausicaa is ability to care for some one. When Nausicaa says, “Stop, my friends! Why run when you see a man? Surly you don’t think him an enemy, do you?”(174)(219-220)This proves that Nausicaa is caring because when all of the other girls ran away from Odysseus she tells them to stop and help him. This is how after reading Book 5 you can tell that Nausicaa is a kind and caring person.
Nausicaa is a very hospitable person. When Odysseus first came to her, he was extremely dirty and naked. While her maids ran off in fright, Nausicaa stood her ground, not afraid, and from the very first time she spoke to him, she called him “friend.” She said to him, “…Seeing you’ve reached our city and our land, you’ll never lack for clothing or any other gift…” She generously offered him food, drink, and even said she would show him around the town and introduce him to the Phaeacians. Along with giving him clothes she also gave him olive oil to rub on his skin. Even though Nausicaa did not know Odysseus or anything about him, and even though he came to her in strange circumstances, so that she did not get the best first impression of him, she was still welcoming and friendly.
After reading book XI, I can tell that Nausicaa is a nice princess who cares for even strangers that she meets. When Odysseus approached Nausicaa and her friends wearing nothing but holding a branch to cover his nakedness, all of her friends ran away, except for Nausicaa. While her friends ran away, “Only Alcinous’ daughter held fast, for Athena planted courage within her heart, dissolved the trembling in her limbs, and she firmly stood her ground and faced Odysseus…” (172-173) She convinces her friends that Odysseus is a good person and tells them to bathe him and to “Give the stranger food and drink…” (176) She then gives advice to Odysseus on how to get to the Palace without being seen from the townspeople. She truly cared and helped Odysseus (even if she needed a little nudge from Athena).
I believe that Nausicaa is wise in her own way. She proves it in many different ways. For example, she stood her ground when Odysseus approached her. She said to Odysseus, “Friend, you’re hardly a wicked man, and no fool, I’d say – it’s Olympian Zeus himself who hands our fortunes out, to each of us in turn, to the good and bad… I’ll show you our town, tell you or people’s name. Phaeacians we are, who hold this city and this land, and I am the daughter of generous King Alcinous.” She can already tell that Odysseus is no ordinary man, that a higher being has brought him here. She then called out to her girls, “Stop, my friends! Why run when you see a man? Surely you don’t think him an enemy, do you? There’s no one alive, there never will be one, who’d reach Phaeacian soil and lay it waste. The immortals love us far too much for that. We live too far apart, out in the surging sea off at the world’s end – no other mortals come to mingle with us.” She is able to show her knowledge by telling her friends that Odysseus will not harm Phaeacia.
After reading Book VI, you can tell that Nausicaa is courageous and generous. You can tell she is courageous by how she reacts when Odysseus comes out of the bushes. "...they scattered in panic down the jutting beaches. Only Alcinous' daughter held fast, for Athena planted courage within her heart, dissolved the trembling in her limbs, and she firmly stood her ground and faced Odysseus..." (page 172, lines 152-155). This passage shows that Nausicaa is courageous because she stood her ground even though everyone else ran away. You can also tell that Nausicaa is generous, after reading Book VI. “Give the stranger food and drink, my girls” (page 176, line 273). This quotation shows how generous Nausicaa is because she gives Odysseus food and water. Nausicaa is also very generous because she gives Odysseus food and water even though she doesn't know who he is. Therefore, after reading Book VI, you can conclude that Nausicaa is very courageous and generous.
Nausicaa is the daughter of King Alcinuous of Scheria. She is a courageous and beautiful young lady who cares for Odysseus very kindly. For example, when Odysseus appears at the bank of the river, she does not run away in fear like the rest of the girls. With the help of Athena,"only Alcinous' daughter held fast... and she firmly stood her ground and faced Odysseus." She then shows the Greek custom of xenia towards Odysseus. Despite the fact that she doesn't know him, she offers him food and wine and oils to bathe with, along with fresh clothing. For example, on page 174 she talks about Odysseus's misfortunes "He (Zeus) gave you pain, it seems. You simply have to bear it. But now," she reassures, "seeing you've reached our city and our land, you'll never lack for clothing or any other gift," she generously sympathizes. This shows how hospitable and generous she is to Odysseus despite the fact that merely about five lines above that she refers to him as "stranger" and then "friend."
